AiR CiTY CHiCKS volleyball club

AiR CiTY CHiCKS volleyball club is committed to providing quality volleyball instruction for girls in grades one thru twelve along with tournament play opportunities age groups 11-and-under through 18-and-under, within the Ohio Valley Region and USA Volleyball. The directors, coaches, and affiliates of AiR CiTY CHiCKS are united in creating an environment where players can learn life-enhancing qualities such as discipline, self-respect, sportsmanship, teamwork, goal definition and achievement, work ethic, self-esteem, confidence & cooperation; while also developing fundamental & strategic skills of volleyball.

AiR CiTY CHiCKS' core philosophies are the cornerstones upon which this club was built. They are:

  • Quality of coaching over quantity of teams - we won't simply add teams to accommodate players if we can't provide quality coaches to coach those teams.
  • We are straightforward and honest - you may not always like what you hear, but it will be honest information that is presented in a direct and fair manner.
  • We will COACH and be passionate about it - our coaches will be actively involved in coaching and instruction both during practices and tournament play.
  • Quality tournaments with minimal tournament travel - even our higher level teams aren't travelling much more than 2-3 hours.
  • Each team has two coaches who are actively participating in ALL practices AND tournaments.
  • Instructional opportunities for younger players and those who may not be able to make a full committment to a club team.

WHAT iS CLUB VOLLEYBALL?
Club volleyball is a "select" volleyball training program for elementary, junior high and high school athletes outside of their school system. Practices are held throughout the week and matches are played in a tournament format on weekends. Most club teams play in 6-10 tournaments throughout the course of this 4-6 month season. The tournaments feature round-robin pool play followed by bracketed playoffs. Some tournaments are one-day events and others are two-day events. Club volleyball is a fee-based program where teams are selected following tryouts. The costs involved with club volleyball cover court rental, coach salaries & registration, equipment costs, tournament entry fees and administrative expenses. In Ohio, club volleyball is governed by the Ohio Valley Region (OVR) and USA Volleyball (USAV). Players and clubs must also adhere to rules set by the OHSAA (Ohio High School Athletic Association) regarding out of season/non-school athletic participation.

In the OVR, teams are classified as National, American, and Regional. National teams consist of higher caliber athletes who play in highly competitive events including USAV national qualifier tournaments which typically entail high entry costs and significant travel. These National level teams are likely to end the season by playing in some sort of a National tournament. Regional teams consist of a athletes (in terms of caliber) who want to learn the fundamentals of the sport, gain playing experience and play tournaments that are more local or regional in nature. And, the American division teams fall somewhere in between the National & Regional divisions, offering somewhat of a mix of these two. Each club structures teams in these divisions differently so make sure to look at what is included at each division within a club to make comparisons between different clubs.

2017-2018 USA VOLLEYBALL GiRLS' JUNiORS' AGE DEFiNiTiONS

PLEASE READ THE SECTION BELOW CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU CONTACT US WITH QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR AGE GROUP**

Using the TABLE BELOW, first find your birth month & birth year and then look at the age group heading at the top of that column. This would be your "age-based" age group. Example: Your birthdate is January 12, 2004 - your "age-based" age group would be 14-and-Under.

If your "age-based" age group is OLDER than that of most of your classmates, you may be considered a "grade level" player. "Grade Level" players are those whose birthdate/year places them in an older age group, but their GRADE IN SCHOOL allows them to play in a younger age group. Example: Your birthdate is August 4, 2004 and you are currently in 7th grade. Based on your BIRTHDATE/YEAR, you would need to try out for 14's; but, because you are still an 7th grader, you would be considered a "grade level" player (playing with your grade) and could play at 13's with other 7th graders. NOTE: Within the OVR, "grade level" players are permitted on Regional and American division teams, but they may NOT play on a National team in the age group for which they are considered "grade level" (they would have to play "up" at the next age group to play National). AiR CiTY CHiCKS does allow "grade level" players on our Regional and American teams, but not all clubs allow this - if you are a "grade level" player who wants to play in the age group with your classmates, please check with the clubs you're trying out for to confirm whether or not they accept "grade level" players on their Regional and/or American teams.

Players who are YOUNGER than most of their classmates in school may be able to play in a younger age group than that determined by their GRADE in school. These players are NOT considered "grade level" players, they are simply players who can determine their age group based on birthdate/year. They may also play in the age group determined by their grade because players are always permitted to try out for OLDER age groups (you just can't play in a YOUNGER age group than your birthdate/year dictates UNLESS you are a "grade level" player).

VERY IMPORTANT: When trying to determine your age group, PLEASE DO NOT simply look at a player's CURRENT AGE (or age at the time of tryouts). In other words, "My daughter is 12 years old, so she should try out for 12-and-under." This statement may or may not be accurate - you must use your birthdate/year first and possibly your grade in school to determine your age group. Example: Player is a 7th grader, is currently 12 years old, and has a January 1, 2005 birthday; she would need to tryout for the 13-and-under age group based on her birthdate/year AND her current grade. Even though she is currently 12, this does NOT make her eligible for the 12-and-under age group.

SPECIAL AGE GROUP SITUATIONS
If you are currently a FRESHMAN in high school, but your BIRTHDATE would permit you to try out for the 14-and-under age group and this is something you would like to pursue; please contact club director, Tina Jasinowski, BEFORE you register for tryouts so that we can discuss some of the "conflicts" that may arise.

2017-2018 TEAM COMPOSiTiON
For the 2017-18 club season, our plan is for ALL of our teams to carry 10 full-time players. On our 14-and-younger REGIONAL teams, coaches will have the option to pick-up two "practice players" in addition to the 10 full-time players. The "practice player" opportunities will be left up the head coach's discretion and would be determined after teams are filled with full-time players. Practice players would pay a reduced fee as indicated in our fee schedule.

AiR CiTY CHiCKS teams are named "PiNK", "BLACK" or "WHiTE" with the "PiNK" teams being the #1 team in an age group, the "BLACK" team being the #2 team, and the "WHiTE" team being the #3 team. The DIVISION that these teams register as (National, American or Regional) within the OVR is different for each age group and will, ultimately, be dependent on the TALENT of players in that age group and the positional depth within that age group. Below is a breakout of the planned structure in each age group for the 2017-18 CHiCKS' season:

  • TWO 11-and-under teams - These teams will be REGIONAL teams and will play a slightly shorter season than our older age group teams. They will end their tournament season in mid April either at a regular tournament or at OVR Championships.
  • TWO or THREE 12-and-under teams - If we only have ONE 11's team, we will likely field a THIRD 12's team (with a possible combination of 11U & 12U players. Our 12-PiNK team will register as an AMERICAN team; our 12-BLACK and 12-WHiTE teams would both register as REGIONAL teams within the OVR. Our 12's teams will end their season with OVR Championships in April.
  • THREE 13-and-under teams - 13-PiNK will register as an AMERICAN team and will play more two-day tournaments than our Regional 13's teams. Our 2nd (13-BLACK) and 3rd (13-WHiTE) 13's teams will register as REGIONAL level teams and will play a similar tournament schedule to one another; ALL of our 13's teams will end with OVR Championships in May.
  • THREE 14-and-under teams - Our top 14's (14-PiNK) will register as NATIONAL/ELITE team - they will play in AMERICAN tournaments within the OVR, but will pay in NATIONAL-LEVEL events outside the region. This team will play a "NATIONAL CALIBER" tournament schedule and will function & practice as a NATIONAL team. The 14-PiNK team will play in eight tournaments - six will be 2-day events, one will be MEQs, and they will end their season at AAU Nationals in Orlando. Our 2nd team (14-BLACK) will register as AMERICAN and our 3rd team (14-WHiTE) will register as REGIONAL. 14-BLACK will play in seven events, four 2-day and three 1-day tourneys; 14-WHiTE will also play in seven events, six 1-day tourneys and one 2-day event. Both 14-BLACK & 14-WHiTE will end their season with OVR Championships in May.
  • THREE 15-and-under teams - Our top 15's (15-PiNK) will register as NATIONAL team, will play in eight tournaments - six will be 2-day events, one will be MEQs, and they will end their season at AAU Nationals in Orlando. 2nd team (15-BLACK) will register as AMERICAN and our 3rd team (15-WHiTE) will register as REGIONAL. 15-BLACK will play in seven events, four 2-day and three 1-day tourneys; 15-WHiTE will also play in seven events, six 1-day tourneys and one 2-day event. Both 15-BLACK & 15-WHiTE will end their season with OVR Championships in May.
  • TWO 16-and-under teams - Our top 16's team (16-PiNK) will register as NATIONAL team, will play in eight tournaments - six will be 2-day events, one will be MEQs, and they will end their season at AAU Nationals in Orlando. Our 2nd 16's team (16-BLACK) will register as an AMERICAN team and play in eight tournaments - seven 2-day events and ending their season at AAU Nationals in Orlando.
  • TWO teams between 17-and-under & 18-and-under - Our 17-PiNK team will register as a NATIONAL team and will play in eight tournaments - seven 2-day events and MEQs; this team will NOT participate in AAU Nationals, but will end the season the first weekend in June. Our 18-PiNK team will register as a NATIONAL team and will play in six tournaments - either all six as 2-day tournaments or five 2-day tournaments and MEQs; this team will end the season in mid-April.

2017-18 AiR CiTY CHiCKS CLUB FEES
AiR CiTY CHiCKS is NOT INCREASING ANY REGIONAL TEAM FEES THIS YEAR! Our American fees have gone up slightly and our National team fees a bit more - this is due to 1) a 6% increase in our court rental costs at south metro and 2) a significant cost increase in the type of tournaments we are now playing in (in order to create a more competitive schedule). Our 2017-18 fees cover club expenses including but not limited to: practice court rental, tournament entry fees, coaches' salaries, administrative functions, registration fees for coaches, equipment costs, AND coaches' tournament expenses.

WHEN COMPARING COSTS BETWEEN CLUBS, please note that AiR CiTY CHiCKS club fees ALREADY INCLUDE: coaches' tournament expense money and ALL tournament entry costs INCLUDING AAU Nationals as well as the usual items. Our UNIFORM COSTS are NOT included in our club fees due to the fact that we enable returning players to "recycle" uniform items whenever possible. More information about uniform costs is detailed below.

    CLUB RULES & POLiCiES

    GENERAL POLiCiES
Our policies have been established to protect all members of AiR CiTY CHiCKS (players and coaches alike). We ask that you respect yourselves and other members of this club when making decisions that could affect any of us.

We hope that AiR CiTY CHiCKS becomes known as a classy program, one that promotes ethical decision making, great sportsmanship (in victory and defeat), and respect for the game and its proponents. Please help us create this type of a program by adhering to our policies and procedures:

    1. Players must wear regular t-shirts to practice. Shirts must be full length, full-sleeved t-shirts that completely cover the waistband of player's spandex. Cut-off shirts or exposure of midriff skin is not acceptable and won't be tolerated. Please dress like an athlete.
    2. Parents may not approach coaches during practice or tournaments to discuss any type of problem situation. Coaches will be happy to schedule time with parents (and player) to discuss and, hopefully, resolve a problem situation. Again, coaches will not address these issues at practice or tournaments.
    3. All players will get playing time at tournaments, but EQUAL playing time is not guaranteed.
    4. Parents are responsible for securing transportation to and from practices and tournaments for their daughter. Parents, please be respectful of your coaches' time and be onsite to pick your daughter up when a practice is scheduled to end!
    5. Once a player accepts a position with AiR CiTY CHiCKS, she is responsible for paying ALL club fees even if injury precludes a her from participating in any/all tournaments. Players who choose to discontinue their season (for any reason) are also obligated to pay all pre-determined fees. Any exceptions to this are at the discretion of the club director and head coach.
    6. Failure to pay club fee installments by designated deadline will result in loss of playing time for an entire match for each day that the payment is late. If you cannot meet an established payment deadline, you must contact the club director, IN ADVANCE of the deadline, to make other arrangements.
    7. Inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated at any AiR CiTY CHiCKS practices, tournaments or events. This includes, but is not limited to foul language, rude or inappropriate gestures, general disrespect of other persons or property.
    8. Bullying and/or verbal or emotional abuse will not be tolerated - this includes action/language directed at teammates, coaches, other members of the CHiCKS, opponents, parents or fans. Please think before you speak or act and ask yourself if your words/actions might be hurtful to someone else.
    9. Players and teams are required to officiate and scorekeep during tournaments, this is a USA Volleyball rule. Players ages 13 and up are required to obtain OVR certification in either scorekeeping or down officiating. 12-and-under players are required to obtain OVR scorekeeping certification. Training opportunities will be provided by AiR CiTY CHiCKS; certification opportunities are available at all OVR tournaments.
    10. Players are required to wear AiR CiTY CHiCKS apparel at tournaments (t-shirts, warm-up shirts, sweats, warm-up suits).
    11. Players will not be permitted to leave a tournament site until all officiating responsibilities have been completed by her team. Permission to leave early will be your head coach's discretion.
    12. For safety reasons, players may not leave a practice site, tournament site or tournament lodging without notifying the coach and obtaining his/her permission.
    13. During multi-day tournaments that require overnight lodging, players must room with their parent/guardian or with a teammate and that player's female parent. Players will not be allowed to room in an unchaperoned room.

    ATTENDANCE
AiR CiTY CHiCKS recognizes and supports the fact that many of our athletes may also play other school sports and may be involved in other school or extra-curricular activities. We also recognize how difficult it is to put a team together when coaches or members of that team are absent during training sessions. Our attendance policy is designed to try to accommodate busy schedules AND our goal of developing better volleyball players and worthy teams.

    1. Player MUST notify team coach(es) whenever she is going to miss practice or arrive more than 15 minutes late for practice. This notification should be given at least 24 hours in advance. Team coach(es) will inform you of the best method for contacting him/her.
    2. Missing a practice DIRECTLY BEFORE a tournament date WILL result in a loss of playing time for ONE FULL SET at that tournament (or the next tournament at which the player is present). Players who miss BOTH practices the week leading up to a tournament will lose playing time for TWO FULL SETS that tournament (or the next tournament at which the player is present).
    3. Missing any part of a tournament will count as one absence and will also result in a loss of playing time for ONE FULL SET at THE NEXT tournament.
    4. Players who have "regular" absences may also suffer playing time loss as deemed appropriate by the head coach of the team. Coaches are asked to notify player/parent when attendance is becoming an issue and may result in loss of playing time at tournaments.
    5. Regardless of the reason, a player may not incur more than 10 absences. The 10th occurrence will result in a review by the team coaches and Club Director and may result in suspension from the team/club. Expulsion from the club is a possible consequence for continued absences after exceeding the initial 10 absences.

    GRiEVANCE PROCEDURE
Should a concern or problem arise, AiR CiTY CHiCKS wants to ensure that the situation is handled in an appropriate manner and that all parties are involved in productive, open communication. Our grievance procedure has been established to facilitate this type of communication.

    First Level

    1. Players are encouraged to maintain an open dialogue with coaches and to schedule a meeting to discuss any type of problem issue.
    2. Players AND parents are encouraged to discuss any club-related problems with one another PRIOR TO scheduling a family meeting with coaches.

    Second Level

    1. If, after First Level attempts, a problem still exists; parents and/or athletes may request a meeting to discuss the issue at hand. This meeting will include both coaches, the athlete and the athlete's parent(s)/guardian(s).
    2. This Second Level meeting will be a privately held, pre-scheduled meeting. Coaches will not discuss problem issues at tournament sites or during practice times - please be respectful of this and do not approach a coach during these times with the intention of discussing a problem situation.

    Third Level

    1. If First and Second Level attempts at resolution are unsuccessful, parent(s)/guardian(s) may request a meeting with the club director.
    2. This meeting will be a privately held, pre-scheduled meeting that will include the Club Director, coaches of the team, player and player's parent(s)/guardian(s). The Club Director will not discuss problem issues at tournament sites or during practice times - please be respectful of this and do not approach the director during these times with the intention of discussing a problem situation.

    Final Level

    1. If all other attempts have been unsuccessful, the parent(s)/guardian(s) may request a meeting with the Board of Directors.
    2. This meeting will be a privately held, pre-scheduled meeting that will include Board Members, Club Director, team coaches, player and player's parent(s)/guardian(s).

    WiNTER WEATHER POLiCiES

The owners at South Metro Sports have indicated that they will not close unless we hit a LEVEL 2 or 3 snow emergency (in the South Dayton Area); therefore, the CANCELLATION of OUR PRACTICES will be up to AiR CiTY CHiCKS and here is what we are planning to do:

    1. In case of bad weather, club director will monitor the television/internet to check the "trends" of other area activities. If it appears that most of the area activities are being cancelled due to weather, we will follow suit and cancel our practices.
    2. A decision will be made no less than 90 minutes prior to our first practice time for the day (please keep in mind that things could change as we move through the day/evening, so IF we have a significant split in practice times, decisions will be made for EACH block of practices.)
    3. Please note: we will not typically make any type of announcement to indicate that practices will be held as scheduled - we will only announce the CANCELLATION of practice. Basically, no news means we're "on" - if you are uncertain, please CONTACT YOUR COACH not the club director.
    4. When practices are cancelled, the following notification process will be implemented:
      • DIRECTOR WILL CALL/TEXT HEAD COACHES >> the most reliable notification method!
      • DIRECTOR WILL POST A NOTICE ON AiR CiTY CHiCKS WEBSITE HOME PAGE >> barring any technical problems & assuming director is at home, this is also very reliable!
    5. Please note that please note that AiR CiTY CHiCKS will not cancel practices based simply on the prediction of bad weather - we will wait and see what happens and go from there.
    6. Once weeknight practices in February, we will make decisions about our practices late in the afternoon - even if school is cancelled that day - as a lot can change between 6 am and 5 pm.
    7. Please DO NOT CALL DIRECTOR AMIDST BAD WEATHER FOR A STATUS - you will simply be tying up the phone and time that is being spent trying to handle the situation. Your head or assistant coach will notify you by phone (call/text) of practice cancellations (or you can visit our website). If you are uncertain and need to contact someone, please contact your head coach.
    8. If we are still having practices, but YOU are unable to make practice due to the weather, it is your responsibility to notify your coach. This would not be considered an "unexcused" absence from practice.

Please remember, it IS winter and we ARE going to get some inclement weather and, undoubtedly, some snow... when you are out and about, please slow down and drive safely!
